New Airport Planned For Pirin

Pirin Airport, the next planned air hub in Bulgaria, is expected to give an extra impetus winter tourism in the Bansko Region. Located around Gotse Delchev, built on the site of an old military airport some 50km from Bansko, it is scheduled to start serving passengers in the winter season 2015/2016. Pirin Airport, an EUR 20 million investment, will serve mainly charter flights to ski resorts Bansko and Dobrinishte. The capacity of the airport is at least 1,500 flights and 100,000 passengers a year from 2015.

The existing airport was last used by the military in 1990. The runway will be enlarged and extended from it's current dimension of 2100m x 25m in order to take passenger aircraft. A platform, passenger terminal and other service facilities are also planned.

Experts expect that the completion of the project will act as a significant stimulus to foreign tourism in Bulgaria and will create nearly 2,000 jobs.
